One of the most enduring clichés in our culture is “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” A profound reason that it is heard so often is because we are all constantly inclined toward making assumptions and judgments. What we first see becomes our lasting impression of any given entity. We constantly tell each other to not judge a book by its cover because, apparently, we all need the constant reminder that our first impression isn’t always exactly reality. Maybe we like saying it to others so much because we would like to convince ourselves that it’s true. In actuality, we certainly do not live as though we believe it. In general, people can and do form judgments by the proverbial book covers, and if we were ultimately convinced of otherwise we would be spending much less money on haircuts, makeup, nice clothing, and various other methods of making ourselves appealing.
Indeed, some experiences in our lives have shown us that judging a book by its cover can lead us down wildly wrong roads, but many other times our instincts are right, and our initial feelings are validated. Life calls upon us to form opinions and judgments every single day. Those powers of reasoning are instilled in us and serve as a protection to us to help us make decisions. While we try to stay balanced and open to the possibility of being wrong, we cannot stop our selves from presuming, assuming, surmising, guessing, deducing, supposing, and concluding, because that is how we safeguard ourselves. Perhaps the cliché needs to be revamped. Maybe we should say, “You can’t judge every book by its cover.” In creating a business image, though, one must be realistic about the scrutiny that will be received.
